Indravati Tiger Reserve is located in the Dantewada district of Chhattisgarh state. Spread across an area of approximately 2799.08 sq. km, the forest was declared as the National Park in the year of 1981. It was given the status of Tiger Reserve under the Project Tiger of India after two years in 1983. One of the famous national parks of Chhattisgarh, the name Indravati has been derived from the River Indravati. This river flowing from east to west creates the northern boundary of the reserve.

The park has the hilly terrain with an altitude varying from 177 to 599 m above the sea level. The area has been covered by various hills such as Kutroo, Kandlapatru and Matti Murka. Along with experiencing rich wildlife and exquisite vegetation, tourists also have the options of sightseeing. An old Shiva temple near village Pasewada inside the Tiger Reserve is a place worth visiting.

Flora @ Indravati Tiger Reserve

The main kinds of forests at the reserve are Southern Moist Mixed Deciduous Forest with Teak, Southern Moist Mixed Deciduous forest without Teak and Southern Dry Mixed Deciduous Forest.

Other species which are found are Teak, Achar, Karra, Kullu, Shisham, Semal, Haldu, Arjun, Bel, Jamun, Rohan, Bahera, Mundi, Kasai Dhaora, Lendia, Saja, Salai, Moyan, Mahua, Dhoban, Siras, Tendu, Bija, etc.

Fauna @ Indravati Tiger Reserve

Along with Tiger, the other endangered species which is found in the reserve is wild buffalo.

Some of the other animals that tourists can spot are Leopards, Gaurs (Indian Bison), Nilgai, Sambar, Wild Boar, Flying Squirrel, Porcupine, Pangolins, Monkeys, Langurs, Chausingha (four-horned Antelope), Sloth Bear, Dhole (Wild Dog), Striped Hyena, Muntjac, etc.

Freshwater Crocodile, Monitor Lizard, Indian Chameleon, Common Krait, Indian Rock Python, Cobra and Russell’s viper are few of the reptiles found here in the park.

Various kinds of birds also reside in the reserve providing good bird watching opportunities.

The ideal time to visit Indravati Tiger Reserve is during the months of December to June.

Reaching Indravati Tiger Reserve

  • By air: The nearest airport to the reserve is at Raipur which is at a distance of 486 km.
  • By Rail: The nearest railhead is at Jagdalpur which is 168 km away from the Indravati National Park.
  • By road: One can reach the reserve quite easily from Jagdalpur which is the district headquarter of Bastar. It is connected to various places via road. The entry point to the reserve is at the village Kutrue, which is located at a distance of 22.4 km on north of Jagdalpur- Bhopalpattanam road.
