Located in the Sawai Madhopur district of south-eastern Rajasthan, Ranthambore Tiger Reserve is at the junction of the Aravalis and the Vindhyas. It is just 130 km away from the city of Jaipur and thus reaching the reserve is not at all a difficult task.

Spread across an area of 1,334 sq. km, the Ranthambore was declared as the Tiger Reserve in the year of 1973. Ranthambhore Tiger Reserve was among the first nine Tiger Reserves under the Project Tiger started by the Government of India. It was declared as the sanctuary in the year of 1955. The reserve is consisted of the former Sawai Madhopur Wildlife Sanctuary as well. It used to be hunting area of the Maharajas of Jaipur. The beauty of the park is increased to a different level altogether by River Chambal in the South and River Banas in the North.
For commuting within the reserve, tourists have the facility of Jeep safari and Canter safari. In order to enter the park, tourists are required to take permission from the government officials. There are some sightseeing options as well for tourists to spend time such as Ranthambore Fort and Jogi Mahal.
Flora @ Ranthambore Tiger Reserve
The main kind of forests found here are Northern Tropical Dry Deciduous forests. Some of the main species of trees that can be spotted here are Dhok, Khair, Raunj, Goya, Chhela, Pipal, Vad, Amaltas, Siris Saintha, Gular, Tendu, Gurjan, etc.
Fauna @ Ranthambore Tiger Reserve
Leopard, Caracal, Ratel, Jungle Cat, Chital, Sambar, Blue Bull, Chinkara, Sloth Bear, Wild Boar, Jackal, Striped Hyena, Common Langur, Common fox, Wild dog, Jackal, Palm Civet, Small Indian Civet, Common Indian Mongoose, small Indian Mongoose, Ratel, Indian Gazelle, Bluebull, Black Buck, etc. are some of the commonly found animals in the reserve along with the tigers.
The reserve has close to 272 species of birds and thus makes a good place for bird watching. There are almost 12 species of reptiles such as Marsh Crocodile and various kinds of amphibians.

The best time to visit Ranthambore tiger reserve is during the months of October to March and from month of April to June.

- By rail: The nearest railway station is Sawai Madhopur railway station which is at a distance of 11 km from the reserve. This lies on the Delhi to Bombay trunk route.
